Measuring a box shape room is easy! Simply measure from wall to wall length and width, measuring a stair case to find out how much carpet you need is a whole different ball game. Follow our guide to measure your stairs!
What you will need:
- Tape measure
- Pen and paper to jot down the sizes
Step 1
Measure the tread (the part of the stairs you put your foot on) and the rise (the vertical part) of a singular step. We recommend you add 3cm onto these measurements to be on the safe side.
Step 2
Add the tread measurement and the rise measurement together, then count how many steps there are in your staircase. Once you have counted how many steps there are times this number by (tread + rise).
For example: my tread is 20cm, my rise is 26cm and I have 12 steps. I would add 20 + 26cm = 46cm then 46cm x 12 steps = 552cm. This is the length of my stair case.
Step 3
Now you have the length of your stair case, time to find out the width.
Measure the tread again but measure the width instead of the length. This measurement is generally larger than the length.
For example: my stair width is 80cm
Step 4
Brilliant! You now have your staircases length and width. For example mine is 80 x 552cm.
Now it is time to measure your hallway and landing area if you are fitting those areas with carpet too.
